Program Description
The ARC Leadership Certificate program was developed by Indiana Wesleyan University in partnership with ARC leaders. Each course is designed to address key items needed to successfully lead in the ARC. Topics vary from addictions treatment to thrift management. Each topic is addressed specifically to the ARC.
ARC Leaders are hired by Indiana Wesleyan University to instruct each course and assess performance of each student. Indiana Wesleyan University oversees each instructor and has the final say for any request outside of the normal scheduled certificate program. Indiana Wesleyan University owns the program and is responsible for all persons, materials, and information found in the program.
The program consists of four courses of study. Each course is between three and six weeks in length. The program contains two intensives held in the second and fourth course. The purpose of this program is to prepare and improve knowledge of future and current ARC leaders.
The program requires a significant investment of time to complete. Each course in the program is between 60 and 90 hours of work. Leaders in the program must complete work and meet deadlines regularly.
Leaders who successfully complete the ARC Certificate program will be awarded a certificate of completion and 12 hours of college credit at Indiana Wesleyan University.
The program is scheduled to run between March and October. You will have some breaks, but it will be busy year of learning.

Course Descriptions

The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers (ARCs) embody a clear and transformative mission: to provide holistic, Christ-centered care for individuals seeking recovery from addiction. With a focus on spiritual regeneration and community restoration, the ARC program integrates faith, work therapy, counseling, and education to empower beneficiaries to rebuild their lives and embrace God’s purpose for them. As a foundational course, ARC 302: Foundations of Addiction Theory and Practice introduces students to the theological and theoretical principles that guide this life-changing mission. Through an in-depth exploration of addiction theories, spiritual frameworks, and practical applications, students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to support recovery and facilitate lasting transformation. The culminating Final Research Paper challenges students to synthesize course insights, apply key concepts from Addiction and Grace, and propose actionable recommendations to enhance the ARC’s spiritual impact. By bridging theory with practice, this course equips students to contribute meaningfully to The Salvation Army’s mission of hope and healing.
You will be able to:
- Explain the major theories of addiction.
- Articulate the methods of treatment application to relevant addictive behaviors and syndromes.
- Understand addiction as it relates to culture, public health and families in contemporary American society.

This course explores the intersection of faith and counseling within the context of addiction recovery. Through interactive sessions, individual and group counseling practice, and reflective activities, students will deepen their understanding of how personal faith, spirituality, and Christian principles can inform and enhance counseling interventions. The course emphasizes practical application within addiction recovery settings, integrating theories, techniques, and spiritual frameworks to support individuals on their journey toward sobriety and spiritual growth. Through experiential learning, collaborative discussions, and self-reflection, students will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to effectively integrate faith and counseling in addiction recovery settings. This course promotes a holistic approach to counseling, emphasizing the importance of spiritual growth, resilience, and community support in the recovery journey.
You will be able to:
- Incorporate the 12 Step process into various spiritual counseling and support contexts.
- Utilize biblical truths to support research and development of the Christian living skills curriculum through a personal change journal and team discussions.
- Apply techniques from ARC-302 in both group and individual spiritual counseling.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of motivational interviewing, empathy, active listening and trauma.
- Curate and develop Christian living material for application to local needs for group spiritual counseling.
- Synthesize biblical principles with the regeneration process.

This course provides a direct opportunity to apply business concepts within the ARC production model. Students will discover key production principles through participation in every aspect of the operation process. Students will interpret financial and point of sales data and learn to apply them to day-to-day decision making. They will identify a potential location and create a proforma budget including production goals required to meet the financial expectation.
You will be able to:
- Develop a strategic plan using needs analysis and other discovery tools.
- Apply management operations and finance best practices to provide appropriate oversight to operations and finances of the ARC.
- Utilize key performance indicators (KPI) to assure quality outcomes and to assist in the preparation of stakeholder reports.
- Communicate to stakeholders the overarching purpose and value of the ARC in the community.
- Evaluate a unique location for the potential addition of a new thrift store.

This course introduces students to the distinctive culture, purposes and practices of the Adult Rehabilitation Centers and identifies the necessary skills required to provide leadership for them. It focuses on the underlying philosophy, principles and practices of effectively mitigating risks associated with Human Resources.

- Blend biblical, business, and educational principles in the development of a high performing teams.
- Describe the elements of the employee life cycle as it relates to the Adult Rehabilitation Center within the Salvation Army.
- Incorporate the factors of employee engagement to enhance the employee experience.
- Apply employee labor laws and Salvation Army policies to promote trust and safety.
- Evaluate administrative and operational imperatives to optimize outcomes aligned with the 12 National Standards.
- Synthesize the relationship of team leadership, the 12 National Standards and organizational success.
